The West City Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1972. We cover approximately thirty-six square miles and are currently staffed by Chief Jimmy C. Reed and thirteen paid volunteers. The department believes in keeping up to date with the most current trainings available. Many of the volunteers are Firefighter II trained, as well as Haz Mat trained.
Our equipment consists of one 1000-gallon FMC pumper truck equipped with foam and a 750-gallon FMC pumper truck. We are very proud of the addition of a new rescue vehicle to our department. The rescue vehicle is equipped with air bag lift systems, Jaws of Life tool, and generator and powerful emergency lighting system. We also have two-brush truck vehicles equipped with water for fighting field and brush fires.
Our firehouse is equipped to house our vehicles and equipment as well as the Chiefs office and a meeting/training area. Monthly reports to the state are made via the computer/internet using the most up to-date software "Firehouse 5.0". We have our own dispatchers and dispatch system and are 911 integrated.
We face a variety of firefighting situations in our area. In the last year we responded to over 40 structure, field fire, and/or rescue calls as well as a plane crash and a massive oil well fire, which received national attention.
